Johannes Eder // PhD 10
Title of thesis: Deracemization of N-Acyl-amino-acids (NAAAs) by combination of NAAA-Racemases and enantioselective crystallization in deep eutectic solvents
Affiliation: Symeres, The Netherlands
Secondments: Graz University of Technology, Austria
Background
I did both my BSc and MSc in Chemistry at NAWI Graz, which is a cooperation between TU Graz and Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz. During those studies I got more and more into the fields of catalysis and biotechnology, culminating in my Master Thesis. For that I combined biocatalysis with transition metal catalysis in a tandem reaction to produce small enantiopure building block molecules.
Hobbies/interest
Sports, playing the piano, reading, travels that include a little adventure
What is the most useless talent you have?
Whistling while singing the letter u
Where is the worst smelling place you have been?
The sewers of Vienna, during a guided tour that is very interesting (as long as you don´t mind the smell)
What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?
My parents taught me that carrots are “garden chocolate”. So as kids we would always run into the garden to get carrots when we wanted something sweet after our meals.
About which topics could you talk for hours?
My stories tend to take hours, since I always explain every little background before cutting the chase, so basically anything (I definitely got that from my mom). My most enthusiastic topics are music and sciences, especially if I try to explain them to someone who has no idea about it.
